Formula E has released its provisional schedule for 2021/22, which will see races in Vancouver, Cape Town and Seoul held for the first time.
In addition to this, the Monaco E-Prix will be held in back-to-back years for the first time, after a successful first running on the full circuit in May. The calendar was today released following the FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting in Monaco today. The number of cities hosting a race will increase, with two TBC spots on the calendar. It is expected that one of these will be filled up by a location in China, with the other so far unknown. It is possible that the other TBC race could be held in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.
The season will get underway with a double header on the 28/29 January 2022 in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, before heading to Mexico City on 12th February. After that, the inaugural Cape Town ePrix will be held on 26th February, before the TBC round expected to be in China on the 19th March. One of the early frontrunning locations for this race is the Sanya location used back in 2019.
The usual first European race in Rome takes place on 9th April, before the Monaco E-Prix is held on the 30th April. Berlin reverts to its usual mid-May date - the 14th as it will be next year - ahead of the second TBC race, scheduled for 4th June. Three races in North America then take place, first the Vancouver E-Prix on the 2nd of July and then a double header in New York over the weekend of the 16th and the 17th of July. London hosts a double header on the 30/31 July, before another double header in Seoul wraps up the season on the 13th and 14th of August.
Where are locations of the new events?
The Cape Town event will be a part of a major e-festival in South Africa’s second-largest city with a multi-year deal for a race at a location around the Green Point Stadium, which hosted matches at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The city recently secured the necessary permit to host the race close to the stadium. The Vancouver race will take place on the Canada Day weekend in early July, and in a similar vein to Cape Town, it will see a sustainability festival combine with music concerts in the same False Creek area of the Canadian city that hosted CART/IndyCar/ChampCar races between 1990 and 2004.
It is already known that the Seoul race will be held around the the Jamsil Sports Complex, with the circuit entering the Olympic Stadium and winding its way around the baseball stadium, watersports stadium and indoor arena.
