Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas and Aston Martin's Lance Stroll have both been given a five place grid penalties for causing a collision at the start of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Bottas, who has won 9 Grands Prix, missed his braking point on the run down to turn 1 on the opening lap, and subsequently rammed into the rear of Lando Norris' McLaren, who, as a result, hit the Red Bull of Max Verstappen, giving Verstappen severe damage. The Dutchman was able to continue, whereas his teammate Sergio Perez, who also got caught up in that incident, received terminal damage, along with Norris and Bottas.

Stroll was given his penalty after he hit the sidepod of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who was resultedly pushed into the other McLaren of Daniel Ricciardo, pitching the Australian into a spin. Leclerc was forced to retire with the engine cover on the right hand side of his car missing, and Stroll also retired with broken suspension on his car.

Those penalties will apply to their qualifying position at the Belgian GP over the weekend of the 27th-29th August.

Esteban Ocon won the race to take his maiden win in F1.
